Should you buy PGA Tour 2K21

This episode we thought wed' try something a little bit different, being stuck back in lockdown during the second wave of COVID-19 here in Victoria it's really good timing that 2k games decided to release their first golf game, PGA Tour 2k21, we thought we'd check it out and let you know whether it's worth buying.

If you're like us then you probably grew up playing tiger woods golf games, they're over the top, unrealistic golf games but they were a hell of a lot of fun and if you really wanted to you could knuckle down and become quite good at them. PGA tour 2k21 comes from a different background and depending on what you want out of your golf game might dictate whether this is the right game for you or not. Made by developer HB Studios, and based on the previously known "The Golf Club" games, PGA 2k21 is a golf simulator at heart. Let's start off with the good things first. There is a ton to do here, there's a career mode, that lets you fight your way through the Q school, the Kornferry tour and the full PGA season to compete, you can even win yourself the fed ex cup, notable exceptions are the majors like the Masters at Augusta, which is disappointing until you find one fo the great joys of 2k21 golf. The course designer, this thing is incredible, you literally have complete control over designing your own course, its takes time and patience but is very satisfying, what's even more enjoyable is that there are so many ridiculously talented people out there that you'll never be stuck finding yourself a new course. Throw in the online and local multiplayer and you've got a lot to do. The presentation of the game is passable, the courses look good without looking amazing, and the swing mechanics can be as difficult as you want them to be, set it to easy and you'll shot the lights out, set it to professional and you'll be hunting for lost balls and throwing your virtual putting into the virtual lake. Now let's take a look at what didn't work quite so well. First of all the commentary in this game is awful, you'll find yourself turning it off in about 5 minutes, your players swing animation does not look fluent at all, he looks like one of those robot golf machines swinging. There are other small issues here too, your player's head will often get in the way of seeing the putts go in, but they're only small issues and could be easily fixed in a patch. I guess what I really wanted here was the ability to choose what type of game I wanted to play, I don't understand why there can't there be an "Arcade Mode" where the game goes over the top for funs sake, and then a "Simulator Mode" for those who want to punish themselves. So finally to answer the question "Should you by this game" the answer is, it depends, what do you want out of your golf game, if its just to get you through lockdown and to have some fun with your friends online then sure, if you want to dial in your skills and challenge yourself, go right ahead, run out and pick it up now. If, on the other hand, you're looking for your Tiger Woods fix, to smash some fireballs through the air or watch the slow-motion zoom in as your ball singes the hole, then this is not the game for you. I kinda find myself in the latter half, I do like this game, I really do and I'll be playing around with the course creator for a while, I just don't love it and I really wanted to.
